Kim Jeong-hoon, also known by his stage name John Hoon, is a South Korean singer and actor. He initially rose to fame as a member of South Korean duo UN debuting with the single Voice Mail in 2000. After the duo disbanded in 2005, his fame increased as an actor starring in Princess Hours, a drama based on a manhwa.
Kim Jeong-hoon was born on January 20, 1980, in Jinju-si, South Korea. He is the son of a civil servant and a housewife. He initially wanted to be a laboratory researcher and studied dentistry at Seoul National University, but he dropped out to pursue a career in entertainment. He later enrolled at Chung-Ang University, where he majored in acting.
Kim Jeong-hoon was selected by Cheonil Records during an audition when the label was looking for new artists. In March 1999, he met Choi Jung-won and they decided to form a duo under the name UN. In July 2000, they released their debut album, Voice, with the title track “Voice Mail”. The album was a commercial success, selling over 300,000 copies in South Korea.UN released two more studio albums, Traveling You (2001) and Present (2003), before disbanding in 2005. Kim Jeong-hoon then released two solo albums, Voice 2 (2006) and Love Best (2007).
Kim Jeong-hoon made his acting debut in the 2004 sitcom Orange. He made his breakthrough role in the 2006 MBC drama Princess Hours, playing the role of Yul, a caring and gentle 19-year-old who is second in line to become the crown prince. The drama was a huge success, and Kim Jeong-hoon gained a large following in Asia.
He has since starred in several other popular dramas, including Love Marriage (2008), Stars Falling from the Sky (2010), and My Cute Guys (2012). He has also appeared in several films, including Natalie (2010) and God of War: Zhao Yun (2016).
