Milhem Cortaz (born December 6, 1972) is a Brazilian actor and presenter. He is of Arab and Italian descent. Cortaz began his acting career in theater at the age of 11, encouraged by the actor Walmor Chagas. He made his professional debut in the play O Santo Milagroso in 1983. At the age of 15, he moved to Italy to live with his aunt in an effort to overcome his addiction to cocaine. He studied at the Piccolo Teatro di Milano and began performing street theater, influenced by Commedia dell’arte. He returned to Brazil in 1990 and joined the Centro de Pesquisa Teatral (CPT) of Antunes Filho. He gained prominence for his performances in plays such as O Melhor do Homem in 1995.
Cortaz made his film debut in the 2000 film Mater Dei. He gained his first major breakthrough in 2003 with his starring role in the critically acclaimed film Carandiru, about the massacre at the prison of the same name. In 2007, he achieved mainstream success with his role in the blockbuster film Elite Squad, in which he portrays a corrupt police officer.
Cortaz has also starred in a number of television novels, including A Próxima Vítima, Torre de Babel, Desejos de Mulher, Carga Pesada, A Diarista, Cidade dos Homens, A Escrava Isaura, Essas Mulheres, Cidadão Brasileiro, and Chamas da Vida.
