Michael Ian Black is an American actor, writer, and comedian. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 12, 1971. His parents divorced when he was three years old, and his father died at age 39. Black grew up in Hillsborough, New Jersey, where he attended Hillsborough High School.
Black attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts but left before graduating. He met and joined the core group of the comedy troupe “The State” while at NYU. The State had a short run with their own MTV show, The State (1993), before attempting a move to CBS in the mid-1990s. Their make-or-break Halloween special fell short of expectations, and a CBS series never came to fruition.

He also starred in the TVLand series The Jim Gaffigan Show. Black has appeared in several films, including Wet Hot American Summer, Run, Fatboy, Run, and This Is 40. He wrote and directed the film Wedding Daze, starring Jason Biggs and Isla Fisher.
